High strength steel 42 CrMo has the characteristics such as high strength, good toughness, low thermal conductivity and high brittle hard et al. It’s poor machinability is reflected in some aspects like large cutting force, high cutting temperature and low tool life et al. At present, high-speed cutting technology is applied in the processing of difficult-to-cut material, which can dramatically improve its machinability, especially in difficult-to-cut material of high hardness, high strength et al. Cutting force and cutting temperature are important characteristics of the physical quantity in the processing of high speed cutting. And they are also important indicators of describing the cutting difficulty level of difficult-to-cut material. Therefore, it’s significant to study the cutting force and cutting temperature of high speed milling process of high strength steel 42 Cr Mo for the machining mechanism of high speed cutting high strength steel, cutting parameter optimization, reduction of processing cost and improvation of processing efficient.In this paper, the cutting force and cutting temperature in high speed milling process was studied by experiment and numerical simulation analysis.(1)The cutting force of high strength steel 42 Cr Mo in high speed milling using PM and GM cutting tool respectively was researched by orthogonal experiment. The research result indicated that ① cutting forces(Fy, Fz, F) increase with the increasing of milling parameters value(cutting per tooth, radial depth of cut, axial depth of cut). Cutting force Fx increases with the increasing of both cutting per tooth and radial depth of cut, but it’s not obvious with the increasing of axial depth of cut. ② the degree of influence of milling parameter on cutting force F one by one is radial depth of cut, cutting per tooth, axial depth of cut. The milling effect of PM and GM cutting tool are nearly in terms of milling force result. The milling forces regression equation of high strength steel are established by using the function of MATLAB, which can be used to predict the influences of milling parameter on cutting forces.(2)The effects of milling parameters(milling speed, axial depth of cut,cutting per tooth) and cutting tool coating on the cutting temperature of high strength steel 42 Cr Mo in high speed milling was researched by single factor experiment. The research result indicated that ① cutting temperature increases with the increasing of milling parameters value(cutting per tooth, radial depth of cut, axial depth of cut). ② The heat-insulating property of CVD cutting tool is superior to PVD cutting tool.(3) The effects of milling parameters(milling speed, cutting per tooth) and cutting tool coating on the cutting force and cutting temperature of high strength steel 42 Cr Mo in high speed milling was researched by high strength steel 42 Cr Mo high speed milling 2-D numerical model established by nonlinear large finite element software(DEFORM). The research result indicated that ① the effect of milling speed is not obvious on cutting force but obvious on cutting temperature. ② the effect of feed per tooth is obvious on cutting force but not obvious on cutting temperature. ③ the effect of material of cutting tool is not obvious on cutting force but obvious on cutting temperature. The cutting temperature increases with the increasing of friction coefficient value between cutting tool and chip.(4) Thin-walled part high speed milling numerical model was established to carryout the applied research of numerical simulation in thin-walled part high speed milling based on high strength steel 42 Cr Mo high speed milling 2-D numerical model. The effects of milling parameters(milling speed, axial depth of cut,cutting per tooth) on the cutting force and cutting temperature of thin-wall part high speed milling was analyzed.
