This paper has mentioned a corrosive liquid detection ball which is used in the gas pipeline. Limited to the development of nature gas pipeline location technology, it can’t be put into application. According to the practical application of pipe environment, this paper put forward the orientation program based on the acoustic communication and ranging principle, and designing the ranging system, the final experimental results shows that it is feasible and reliable.Using the time difference to rang, the data packets can be sent and received between nodes. The distance between two nodes can be indirectly calculated by measuring packet propagation time. What is more, the software radio technology is used in the acoustic communication. And modulation method is phase modulation. In order to achieving the acoustic communication, hardware implementation used the external circuit and FPGA which is mainly designed to the acoustic modem.Ranging system includes the acoustic transceiver circuit and FPGA digital circuit. Acoustic transceiver circuit includes ADC, DAC, analog filters, microphones, audio input amplifier and the output power amplifier. The FPGA digital circuit contains the time difference generation module, acoustic communication module and a digital circuit interface module. In the FPGA design methodology, we use a combination of the Quartus II with Dsp Builder. First, we use the simulation module in Dsp Builder to create a simulation model in Simulink, and simulate. Then, we use the Signal Compiler to change the simulation model into VHDL code, and use the Quartus II to compile the code, downloading to the hardware to finish the FPGA digital circuit design.The method of acoustic communication and ranging is a new way to exclude the impact of random noise on the ranging accuracy, at the same time, increasing the signal emission intensity can extend the scope of ranging. It provides a good technical solution for the pipeline corrosive liquid detection ball’s positioning. This technology will promote the development of long-distance pipeline rot detection ball and speed up the pace of its entered actual application.
