Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developing at a surprising speed due to their potential applications in hydrogen and other gas storage, ion exchange, separation processes, catalysis, sensor, non-linear optics, magnetism, and drug delivery. In this thesis, three novel metal organic frameworks with quite different crystal morphology [CdCl2TPOM]·2H2O(1),[CdTPOM(HCOO)2(H20)2]·H20(2),[Cd2I4(TPOM)(HCOO)(DMF)](3) were synthesized and characterized by reactions of the semi-rigid flexible linker tetrakis(4-pyridyloxymethylene)methane)(TPOM) with Cd(II).1and3were-found having3D porous structures, while2was made of1D chains. We systematically studied the effect of halogen anions and acidity on the structures and morphologies of the products.1has a moderate H2adsorption capacity (1.17-1.30wt%). The crystalline sample of1were found to have a better hydrogen storage capacity (1.30wt%) than that of the powder sample (1.17wt%). In chapter3, the MOFs synthesized in the Zn(II)-1.4-terephthalic acid system were summarized. The relationships between the synthetic conditions, the structures, and stabilities were sought. The interconversion between these phases and their water stabilities were discussed. The findings should be useful for the design of related water stable MOF materials. In chapter4, a chiral carboxylate gand2,8-Bis(carbonyl)-6H,12H-5,11-methanodibenzo-[b.f][1,5]-diazocine (BCMD) was synthesized and characterized by]H spectroscopy.1D chain Zn(BCMD)(H2O)(DMA)(8) was obtained using this ligand and was characterized by single crystal XRD diffraction, powder XRD diffraction, and elemental analysis. The air and water stability of1,2.3and8were also studied.
