This paper is aiming at research the tool path generation algorithm for high speed machining. In order to achieve high speed machining, the tool path should be smooth, continuous and the cutting force change smoothly. The tool path generated by the traditional tool path generation method will have many corners and invalid tool moving, besides the cutting force cannot change smoothly, therefore this tool path cannot satisfy the demand of high speed machining. In order to solve this problem, this paper raise a new tool path generation method by spiral. This paper focus on the research of spiral tool path generation algorithm, it mainly includes these points in detail:1. Research on 2-dimension spiral tool path generation algorithm. By using the partial differential equation in the steady-state heat transfer theory, the spiral tool path generation model is built, and obtain the spiral tool path by solving the model.2. Research on Free-form surface spiral tool path generation algorithm. The mapping method is proposed, the free-form surface is mapping to parameter domain, and the spiral tool path is constructed in the parameter domain, then the spiral tool path is inverse mapping to the free-form surface.3. Software integration of the spiral tool path generation algorithms. The two spiral tool path generation algorithms are integrated together, a tool path generation software TopMilling is developed based on ACIS.4. Research of 5-axis milling process. Integral panel and rocket tank are took as the examples of 5-axis milling, and finally finish the milling process.
