Photocatalytic oxidation technology is one of important methods used for the degradation of persistent organic pollutants, which has a lot of advantages, such as high efficiency, energy saving, no second contamination and so on. Therefore, the synthesis and application of photocatalyst has become a hot subject. In this work, BaBiYbO4 was synthesized by solid-state reaction method. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scan electronmicroscopy) and so on. The single-phase BaBiYbO4 sample was synthesized successfully at 1050 ℃ for 40 h. The compound BaBiYbO4 was of high purity and well crystallized with a cubic crystal system, a space group Fm3m 225. Results showed that the sample was irregular-shaped particles with a small specific surface area. It showed a strong optical absorption in the visible light region with a band gap of 1.979 eV.The photocatalytic activities of BaBiYbO4 samples prepared were evaluated by the photodegradation of azo dye Ponceau S under visible light irradiation. The effects of synthetic process, photocatalyst loading, initial concentration, pH and the effects of coexisting ions on the photocatalytic degradation efficiency were studied in detail. Furthermore, the composite photocatalyst BaBiYbO4-TiO2 was synthesized. Results showed that the photocatalytic degradation activity of 10 wt% B-T was higher than that of other photocatalysts. Moreover, as a visible-light photocatalyst, the stability of 10 wt% B-T was also studied. Results showed that the photocatalytic activity was still excellent after three runs which showed a good stability of the 10 wt% B-T composite photocatalyst.
