N-halamine derivatives are efficient antibacterial agents, which have been widely used in antibacterial field due to the advantages of their biocidal functions against a broad range of microorganisms, long term stabilities and regenerable properties. Pad-dry-cure process was usually used in traditional antibacterial finishing process, which was conducted at high temperature and in the presence of initiators or crosslinking agents. In this study, electron beam irradiation process was applied to modify cotton with N-halamine compounds. In the first part, N,N-Methylene bisacrylamide(MBA) was grafted onto the cotton through electron beam(EB) irradiation process and pad-dry-cure(PDC) process, respectively. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) was used to characterize the grafted cottton. And the antibacterial test, UV stability test, washing stability test and the tensile strength were also measured. The second part studied the relationship between antibacterial property and hydrophobic property. In order to investigate the antibacterial property of the modified cotton with different contact angle, the hydrophilic monomer acrylic acid(AA), hydrophobic monomer vinyl terminated silicone oil(TSIO) and 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorooctyl acrylate(PFA) were added into the antibacterial solution of MBA, respectively. SEM and FTIR were used to characterize the grafted cottton. And the antibacterial test, UV stability test, washing stability test and the tensile strength were also measured. In the third part, 3-(3’-acrylicacidpropylester)-5,5-dimethylhydantoin(APDMH) was synthesized and bonded onto cotton fabric by electron beam irradiation process and pad-dry-cure process. The new precursor was characterized by 1H NMR. SEM and FTIR were used to characterize the grafted cottton. And the antibacterial test, UV stability test, washing stability test and the tensile strength were also measured. The results demonstrated that cotton grafted with the monomer MBA and the new precursor APDMH showed excellent antibacterial property after treated with sodium hypochlorite. The chlorinated samples modified by MBA and APDMH in EB process were challenged with Staphylococcus aureus(ATCC 6538) and E. coli O157:H7(ATCC 43895), and could inactivate 100% of the 6 logs bacteria within the contact time of 10 min. The modified samples also showed good anti-ultraviolet and regenerable properties. The study of the relationship between antibacterial property and hydrophobic property revealed that the stronger the hydrophobic property was, the less effective the antibacterial property showed.
