With the rapid development of electric power industry, air pollutants, including particular matter, SO2, and NOx, have been increasing. With the deterioration of the air pollution, fine particles pollution has become a prominent atmospheric environmental problem in China. The dry electric precipitator is difficult to meet the requirements of the new emission standard of air pollutions for thermal power plants. As a terminal and advanced treatment technical, wet electrostatic precipitator(WESP) can efficiently remove the ultrafine particulate matters, acid mist and mercury from the flue gas.This paper firstly analyzed the current situation of air pollutions, then introduced new particular matters control technologies in coal-fired power plant, and finally stated WESP technical features and applications especially in large-scale coal-fired power plant at home and abroad. The key technology for WESP, including flexible electrode (membrane electrode), discharge electrode and structure of WESP, were all studied. The engineering application of flexible electrode wet electrostatic precipitator was carried out in the paper.The laboratory research mainly focuses on numerical modeling and electrode configuration of the WESP. By comparing two 300MW coal-fired units (Yiyang Power Plant#1,#2 units) engineering projects which were equipped with the flexible electrode WESP, the design process, the structure, the discharge electrode, and the flow field simulation of WESP in these two 300MW coal-fired units were analyzed.Research results indicated that the reliability and stability of flexible electrode WESP was improved by using the studied structural form and tailor-made discharge electrode. The results of this research, such as the vertical structure, high-efficiency counter flow structure, discharge electrode of 2205 duplex stainless steel with four point, and fishbone titanium alloy wire with six point, were fit for industrial application.
