Nanowires have a large length-diameter ratio and excellent magnetic anisotropy, suitable for the high density magnetic recording area as perpendicular magnetic recording material. In this paper, CoCl2-EMIC and SmCl3-CoCl2-EMIC ionic liquids were prepared. In the two systems, Co and SmCo magentic nanowires were electrodeposited without template by controlling electrochemical parameters. This study provided a simple and practicable way for the synthesis of nanowires.The cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were used to analyze cathode process and nucleation mechanism. Compared Co nanowires electrodeposited from CoCl2-EMIC, the length-diameter ratio of SmCo nanowires electrodeposited from SmCl3-CoCl2-EMIC significant increased. The diameter of SmCo nanowires electrodeposited from 1.67:60:60mol% SmCl3-CoCl2-EMIC at -0.68V 90℃ for 400s is less than 100nm.The influence of component、potential、temperature and time on deposit morphology were researched. VSM results showed, saturation magnetization and magnetic anisotropy of SmCo were superior to Co nanowires, more suitable for perpendicular magnetic recording material.The stability of different ionic liquids in the air were examined by Raman spectrum. The results showed CoCl2-EMIC and SmCl3-CoCl2-EMIC were very stable in the air, can be saved for a long time without absorbing water. The ionic liquids saved in the air were used for electrodeposition. Compared to those electrodeposited in glove box, no differences were found. This finding has provided a meaningful method to extend ionic liquid application range.
