Secondary refining technology is an important section in the steelmaking process; furthermore it is significant for improving the quality of the final steel products. Therefore, all of the countries which have the advanced steelmaking technology are trying their best to develop the secondary refining technology.The bottom blown ladle is an important part in secondary refining process. It is getting more and more attention in the world because of its advantages such as desulfurization, decarburization, making liquid steel temperature homogeneously and inclusion removal and so on. This paper used the water model experiment to study the bottom blown ladle in the following aspects:1. This paper studied the mixing time by changing the number of porous plug, the position of one porous plug, the blowing angle of two porous plugs and the gas flow rate and analyzed the effect of critical gas flow rate for the mixing time. The paper also made a comparison of mixing time between one porous plug and two, so we can offer the accurate parameters to improve the efficiency of ladle furnace.2. Through water model experiment, we studied the different stages of slag and slag eye areas by changing the number of porous plug, the position of one porous plug, the separation angle of two porous plugs, the gas flow rate and thickness of slag and acquired a dimensionless equation about the different parameters, so we can have a good knowledge of the slag’s behaviors.We summarized the following conclusions through the experiment:1. Both single and two porous plugs, the mixing time decreases with the increase of gas flow rate. But the larger the gas flow rate is, the more seriously erosion will happen on the wall of the ladle, so it is harmful to the ladle’s life. With one porous plug, the 0.62R is the best position for mixing time and with two porous plugs, the 180° separation angle is the best.2. Through the comparison of mixing time between one porous plug and two porous plugs, the 0.62R and 180° are the best, but with the larger gas flow rate, the two porous plugs with 180° will be the best.3. With one porous plug blown, the closer the porous plug to the wall is, the larger the slag eye will become, and the more seriously the wall will be eroded. Under the same gas flow rate and slag thickness, the slag eyes have different areas at different time. The larger the slag thickness is, the smaller the slag eye area will become. With two plugs blown, the larger the angle is, the weaker the collision will become, the larger the slag eye will be. With the same of one porous plug, the thinner the slag is, the larger the slag eye will become.4.
