In recent years, air pollution is one of the major environmental issues in China, posing a great threat to social development and human health. Therefore, it is extremely necessary to study the spatial and temporal distribution of atmospheric pollutants. Basically, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) and particulate matter 10 (PM10) are important representatives of atmospheric pollutants. This paper describes the composition and environmental monitoring methods of VOCs, NO2, PM2.5 and PM10.Fifty three kinds of VOCs were monitored in Dalian, with the average concentration 1.176 ppb. The higher concentration levels appeared in traffic morning and evening peak periods. Source analysis identified motor vehicle exhaustation, volatile chemical industry and vegetation emissions as the major sources of VOCs. Olefin was the most abundant VOCs, at a concentration of 2.636ppb, while alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations were 1.091ppb and 0.198ppb, accounting for 52.83%,26.42%,20.75% respectively.Analyzed in the spatial and temporal distribution of PM2.5 and PM10 in nine distribution sites, studies identified motor vehicle exhaustation and coal-fired heating emissions in winter as the major pollution sources. In addition, the daily concentration of NO2 demonstrated M-type distribution affected by traffic conditions. However, monthly concentration of NO2 was affected by coal-fired boiler heating emission. The analyses within 9 monitor sites located in different functional areas revealed that the northeast wind conditions have great impacts on the NO2 concentration, which showed a ladder-like distribution in different functional areas. The present study puts forward specific recommendations and treatment measures in energy structure, industrial zones, heating system, road traffic, vehicle emissions for Dalian.
