This study aims to obtain key technology parameters of optimization centering of peeling logs, which based on laser triangulation method, with the international advanced centering system as the goal, to meet the needs of the domestic veneer enterprises to center the logs. The experimental platform was established for logs radius measurement by the laser displacement sensor scanning device, and the software module was developed for logs digitalization and logs centering. Through the poplar characteristics research, logs digitalization test, logs centering and validation test, the following conclusions were obtained:(1) The shape characteristic of polar log is the reality basis of the centering device and centering algorithm. Four feet peeling logs are mainly distributed in 150 mm-200 mm in diameter; eight feet peeling logs are mainly distributed in 250 mm-400 mm in diameter. The curvature of four feet peeling logs is distributed between 0 to 7%, concentrated in 2% to 3%; The curvature of eight feet peeling logs is distributed between 0 to 3%, concentrated in 1% to 2%. (2) In the logs digitization, the error of radius measured by laser sensors was within+1 mm; Scanning data error was in controlled within±1 mm. Digital filter can effectively filter out invalid values. The higher scanning speed, data stability declines. Data stability of angle step at 5° and 10° is higher than the data of 15° and 20°. (3) Centering processing time is related to computer computing ability and centering algorithm. Centering processing time can be controlled within 0.2 s-0.8 s, and the time increased with the decrease of the angle step, differed from the searching neighborhood. (4) The optimization of the centering parameters: lr/s motor speed, angle step length of 10° and the first neighborhood search algorithm.
