Coal plays an important role in China’s energy structure, which has made an important contribution to the economic development of our country. Recently two years, haze frequently struck, people put spearhead the coal, pointed out the need to reduce the amount of coal consumption clearly, but to "rich coal, lean oil, less gas," in China, in the short term to large-scale alternative to coal consumption. In order to comply with the state and the requirements of the market, coal washing has very important practical significance.Hand picking operation is an important part of coal preparation. In the background of coal prices fell sharply and coal enterprise efficiency seriously shrinks, the traditional hand selection makes the coal enterprise’s production and management cost is higher. Labor intensity of coal gangues is strong and the production efficiency is relatively low. Gangue picking rate is influenced by the quality of workers and management level and other factors. Choosing operation facilities based on the original hand, setting coal and gangues on-line automatic sorting system is conducive to further reduce the worker’s labor intensity, improve the working environment of workers, reduce the cost of labor and management, improve the hand selected quality and reduce the burden on the part of the follow-up sorting and easy centralized management. It is very important to separate the block gangue and to set up the on-line automatic sorting system of coal and gangue.Firstly, methods of coal and gangue automatic sorting are discussed and finally use machine vision to identify coal and gangue. The recognition of coal and gangue depends on the gray level of their surface. Secondly, giving a brief overview of the machine vision system, and then the image processing algorithm is discussed, finally the operator of the image processing of coal and gangue is determined, namely gray-scale transformation, Gauss filtering, image enhancement, image segmentation, edge extraction, edge area of inner hole filling, finally extract the gray feature of the edge of the internal value. According to the gray value and deviation, coal and gangue are identified. Finally the image acquisition system, lighting system and actuator are designed.
