In this paper, a variety of nitride coatings(Ti N coatings, Ti Al N coatings, Ti Al Si N coatings and Ti Al Ag N coatings of different Ag contents) were prepared on the base material surface of 304 stainless steel, respectively, by reaction magnetron sputtering technique. The friction and wear experiments of the nitride coatings were performed by using high temperature friction and wear testing machine, severally. The fore-and-aft wear surface morphology, cross-section morphology, microstructure, composition, hardness and wear depth of those coatings have been observed and analyzed by means of scanning electron microscope(SEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), energy spectrum analyzer(EDS), microhardness tester and 3D stereo microscope, respectively, to research the tribological properties and abrasion mechanism of Ti N coatings, Ti Al N coatings and Ti Al Si N coatings at different wear temperature(room temperature(RT), 200℃, 400℃, 600℃), and the effects of different Ag contents of Ti Al Ag N coatings on high temperature tribological properties. The main research results are as follows.High temperature tribological properties and abrasion mechanism of Ti N coatings,Ti Al N coatings and Ti Al Si N coatings have been researched at different wear temperature. The surface of these coatings are all relatively dense, the coatings all have the structure of the columnar crystal, and with the addition of Al and Si, the structure of the coatings become more compact, and the grain size of that decreases. As the wear temperature incraesed from RT to 600℃, the friction coefficient and wear volume of Ti N coating first increased and then decreased, the Ti N coating at 200℃ had better wear properties and the main wear mechanism of Ti N coatings at different wear temperature were abrasive wear, abrasive wear, abrasive wear and oxidation wear, respectively. The friction coefficient and wear volume of Ti Al N coatings all increased firstly and then decreased, its tribological properties first decreased then increased, the tribological properties of Ti Al N coatings are best at the wear temperature of 400℃, the main wear mechanism of the Ti Al N coatings at different wear temperature were abrasive wear, abrasive wear, abrasive wear with a small amount of oxidation wear, and oxidation wear with a small amount of abrasive wear, respectively. The friction coefficient and wear volume of Ti Al Si N coatings decreased in turn at the wear temperature, and its wear resistance increased gradually, the main wear mechanism of the Ti Al Si N coatings at different wear temperature were abrasive wear, abrasive wear, oxidation wear with asmall amount of abrasive wear, and oxidation wear, severally. The tribological properties at the same wear temperature of Ti N coatings, Ti Al N coatings and Ti Al Si N coatings have been studied. The friction coefficient and wear volume of Ti N coatings,Ti Al N coatings and Ti Al Si N coatings decreased in turn at the wear temperature of RT, 200 ℃, 400 ℃ and 600 ℃, respectively, and their abrasion properties increased in turn. The friction coefficient and wear volume of Ti Al Si N coatings at the wear temperature of 600℃ have the minimum values of 0.2, 0.0136mm3,respectively, and the high temperature abrasion properties of Ti Al Si N coatings is the best. The influences of different Ag contents of Ti Al Ag N coatings on high temperature tribological properties have been investigated. As the Ag content of Ti Al Ag N coating increased from 0 at. % to 21.38 at. %, the friction coefficient and wear volume of the coatings reduced in turn at the wear temperature of RT, 200 ℃, 400 ℃ and 600 ℃,respectively. And the abrasion properties of the coatings increased in turn, respectively. When the wear temperature was 400 ℃, the abrasion properties of the Ti Al Ag N coating was the best, and the Ti Al Ag N coatings that had Ag content of 21.38 at.% have a minimum friction coefficient of 0.23. With the increase of Ag content, the main abrasion mechanisms of the coatings at the wear temperature of RT and 200℃ all were abrasive wear; the main abrasion mechanisms of the coatings at the wear temperature of 400℃were abrasive wear with a small amount of oxidation wear, abrasive wear, and abrasive wear, respectively; at the wear temperature of 600℃, the main abrasion mechanisms of the coatings all were oxidation wear.
