A380 alloy(ASTM standard) is one of the most widely used high pressure die casting(HPDC) aluminum alloys in structural applications such as automobile and motorcycle. But the high content of Cu(3.0~4.0%), forming the Cu-bearing with high electrode potential, makes the alloy easily subject to corrosion in humid environment, therefore, limiting the application of A380 in industry. A360 is another die casting alloy with high corrosion resistance. But its poor mechanical properties also makes it difficult to be applied in industry. Early, we have developed a new alloy with high strength and high corrosison resistanc in the permanent mold casting condition. The objective of this research is to study the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the new alloy made in die casting condition, and to compare these abilities with baseline alloys A380, A360 and a japan brand alloy ADC12.First we will study the physical properties of the new alloy, including density, specific heat capacity, linear expansion coefficient, and thermal conductivity, this will provide reference to the industrial applications for the new alloy, and will preparedata for the simulation next.By using professional casting simulation software Anycasting and Finite difference numerical simulation technology, and studying the filling process, solidification process and temperature field distribution in the die casting process, we were able to forecast the casting defects in the component. And we also verify the simulation results by X-ray and mechanical test.We produced both the new alloy and baseline alloys components in high pressure die casting condition, estimate the casting ability by observing the surface quality and pore inside; compare the mechanical properties by analyzing the microstructure and tensile test; obtain the corrosion rate of the alloys through immersion test; study the corrosion mechanism by electrochemical test. The new alloy has not only good cast ability, but also better mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.
