EPDM is polymerized by ethylene, propylene and the third monomer. Its main chain is saturated alkane chain. Because of its excellent heat oxygen aging, ozone aging, weather resistance, acid-base resistance properties, it is widely used in many industries. However, its strength is low before reinforcement. Only reinforced, its excellent properties can be exhibited. ZDMA is one of unsaturated carboxylic acid salt and one of creative fillers. We select ZDMA to reinforce EPDM. As the differences between ZDMA and EPDM, the agglomeration of ZDMA is obvious. In this paper,We also improve the dispersion of ZDMA in EPDMWe synthetically took advantage of FTIR, DSC, RPA and TGA to research the characteristics of ZDMA. To improve the strength of EPDM, we researched the effect of different ZDMA, the effect of ZDMA loading, the effect of processing parameters to the reinforcement of EPDM. Improve the dispersion of ZDMA in EPDM, we select paraffin oil, OPE and the in-situ reaction of ZDMA in EPDM. The ratio of G’ at 15% and G’at 0.5% can be used to quantize the dispersion and the G’at 15% and G’at 0.5% are obtained from strain scanning curves. In the end, we synthetically utilize RPA,DSC,FTIR,XRD and polarizing microscope to research the reinforcement mechanism.The results demonstrated that the first decomposition temperature of ZDMA is 240℃, the weight loss is 20%. With the initiation of DCP, ZDMA start to polymerize at 140℃. The reinforcement effect of ZDMA-708 is better than that of ZDMA-634. When the content of ZDMA is 30phr, the mechanical properties is optimal. The tensile strength is 15.2MPa, the elongation at break is 259%. When we adopt two-stage mixing process,80rpm rotator speed,120℃ discharging temperature, the properties of vulcanizate are optimal. Paraffin oil can improve the dispersion of ZDMA. When loading 20phr paraffin oil, the dispersion of ZDMA is optimum. Because of the polarity of OPE((A-C8A), it obviously improve the dispersion of ZDMA. No mater improving the strength or improving the dispersion of ZDMA, the method of in-situ polymerization ZDMA in EPDM is better than that of direct filling. The results of reinforcement section demonstrate that ZDMA polymerize into PZDMA with the help of DCP, and part PZDMA graft to the rubber chains, which is called g-PZDMA. The g-PZDMA links ZDMA and EPDM. PZDMA form into nano-sized particles. The particles are existed in the form of ion cluster.
