Rotary steerable drilling technology is the representation of the highest level of drilling technology in the world. With the demand for accurate drilling in oil industry, more and more research works have been carried out on this new sophisticated drilling technology. Rotary steerable systems(RSS) have some obvious characteristics, such as smoother wellbores, larger operating envelopes, real-time close-loop control system and so on. Some leading foreign oil-field service companies have already built complete rotary steerable drilling service systems. They only provide exorbitant drilling service to China but we couldn’t buy the whole drilling systems from them. It is very urgent for us to do research on this technology to develop a drilling system with independent intellectual property rights. It’s helpful to break the overseas technical monopoly.In order to develop control systems for two generation RSS models, some exploratory work was finished:1. An overview of the RSS systems used in foreign countries.2. Analyze the regulation principle of the double eccentric rings. The mathematical relationship between inner eccentric ring and structural angle is given. In order to solve the sudden change in orientation angle measurement,a set of angle mapping scheme is given.3. Analyze the working principle of the first generation RSS model. A control system based on this model is developed.4. Design the sensor measurement scheme based on the second generation RSS model. Test the capability of orientation angle sensor. Design and test the actuator of the second generation RSS model.5. Develop the double close-loop tool face control system used in the second generation RSS model. Adjust the parameters of the tool face controller and give the test result of this control system. The test result can fulfill the required properties.
