Polymer materials have played a significant role in the national economy and people’s lives, but general polymer materials are flammable, prone to fire accidents, which is a huge threat to human lives and property. Thus, flame retardant materials are highly valued. Although some of the traditional flame retardants, such as organic bromine flame retardants, have been commercially used in computers and other electronic equipment, the organic bromine flame retardants are easy to release toxic gas in the process of combustion. Therefore, developing novel organic flame retardant is an important research issue.Organic boron flame retardants are non-toxic and highly effective.In order to develop boron-based flame retardant, broaden its flame retardant system,organic boronic acid derivative containing thiophene ring, 2,4,6-tris(4-boronic-2-thiophene)-1,3,5-triazine(3TT-3BA),was synthesized, the products were charactered by NMR and FTIR,the thermal properities were studied by TGA and DSC, the chemical structure is as follows.In this paper, adding different ratios of 3TT-3BA to EP, the flame retardant properity were investigated by TGA, limiting oxygen index(LOI), vertical burning, cone calorimeter, etc. The results showed that when 20% 3TT-3BA was added to the EP, the LOI was 31.2%, reached UL94 V-0 rating, HRR, THR, SPR, TSP dropped a lot. 3TT-3BA and its intermediate products were added to EP, 3TT-3BA had the better flame retardant properity by comparing the thermal properity and flame retardant properity of EPs. FTIR-TGA and SEM analysis showed that 3TT-3BA was condensed phase flame retardant, while there was also flame retardant effect in the gas phase, 3TT-3BA is an inrumescent flame retardant.The paper also studied the synergistic flame retardant effect of 3TT-3BA and Mg(OH)2, the study concluded that adding 10% 3TT-3BA and 10% Mg(OH)2 to the EP, the LOI was 32.5%, reached UL94 V-0 rating, comparing with EP/20% 3TT-3BA, the HRR and THR also decreased, 3TT-3BA and Mg(OH)2 has synergistic flame retardant effect, the flame retardant mechanism was discussed by elemental analysis.
