In order to better deal with the low strength, high floating rate and other issues of crushed activated carbon, and make full use of the feature of abundant coal resources in Xinjiang, especially low coal prices, low ash content and high reactivity and so on. In this paper,we studied technology and performance of Xinjiang coal briquetted activated carbon.We have conducted extensive research for Xinjiang coal based on the literature and research on coal anaysis, and selected coal samples from Hutubi, Tuokexun, Baicheng, Qitai,and Aiweiergou mines. Analyzed and selected coals which were suitable for the preparation of activated carbon according to exploratory tests. And obtained the coal briquetted activated carbon with high iodine value, high methylene blue value, and low intensity through the study on the optimum conditions for single coal briquetted activated carbon. Theories of coking with coal blending and particle size graduation were applied to the preparation of briquetted activated carbon, and blended Hutubi coal with gas coal, fat coal and 1/3 coking coal whose adhesion are better, respectively. Then briquetted. Determined the optimum process parameters according to examining the effect of carbonization temperature, activation temperature, heating rate, blending ratio and particle size graduation on strength and iodine value of activated carbon. Results showed that: Hutubi coal is the best material for the preparation of briquetted activated charcoal and briquetted result is the best when blended with fat coal. Hutubi XJ coal washed and fat coal were grinding to 325 meshes and 400 meshes, respectively. Then particle size graduated in accordance with the ratio of 90:10,mixed and briquetted, after this, broken into small pieces with a certain size. Then briquetted activated carbon products can be obtained after carbonization and activation. The best process parameters are as follow: the final temperature and heating rate of carbonization were 600 ℃and 2 ℃/min, respectively. Activation parameters: the activation temperature was 900 ℃,steam flow was per 40 g, carbonized material was 0.5 ml/min and the activation time was 210 min. The iodine adsorption value, methylene blue adsorption value, strength and ash content of briquetted activated carbon product were 1122 mg/g, 238 mg/g, 91.9% and 6.38%,respectively. All performance indicators can meet the needs of the market.This paper has a certain advising to the application of Xinjiang coal briquetted activated carbon.
