Air pollution is one of the most serious problems for human’s survival and development. Most of the organic emissions (such as Xylene) are toxic, harmful, and great harm on the human body, so treatment of organic emissions of air pollution is of great concern and essential. While waste oil pollution on soil and water are becoming increasingly serious, and treatment is extremely difficult. In this paper, there is a innovation that waste lube oil si considered as a new type of absorbent to control Xylene emissions, and experiments are carried out, namely, which reflects the important concept of environmental protection that using waste to control waste, and transforming waste into useful species. In the paper, a packing tower with cramic Rasching ring is adopted to study the adsorption behavior against self-prepared Xylene waste gas, which is considered as prototype. First of all, esters, organic acids, mixture of compounds as well as other compounds are selected as absorbent to compare their absorption of the Xylene. By contrasting experiments, waste lube oil is identified as the best of all in terms of their absorption efficiency, economic benefit. In addition, the absorption principles are discussed. Secondly, there is a systematic study about the impact of various factors on absorption efficiency of Xylene, involving spray volume of absorbent, volume of gas, the ratio of liquid-gas, the operation temperature, the entrance concentration of Xylene, the absorption time and absorption cycles. Finally, a four-factor-five-level orthogonal test is carried out. Based on direct analysis of the experimental data, the major factors to effect on absorption of Xylene are revealled and optimal parameters are established, which are consistent with verification test. This paper provides essential data and process parameters for the industrialized treatment of Xylene emissions. In the paper, experimental results show that:(1) As an absorbent, absorption efficiency of waste lube oil against Xylene waste gas (waste transformer oil) lube oil is the best, and waste oil is the cheapest. The absorption efficiency of lube oil is 87.7% on average, so waste oil can be considered as a good absorbent.(2) Absorption efficiency of lube oil against Xylene increases with the spraying volume of lube oil spray increasing, but the absorption efficiency do not change significantly when the volume reaches a limited extent; it reduces with air volume increasing; while it increases with the ratio of liquid-gas increasing, but it remained basically unchanged after a certain value arrives; it decreased with absorption temperature elevated; it increases with the inlet concentration increasing, but the absorption rate will remain basically unchanged, or even decline in a certain concentration; it increases with the absorption time increasing, and absorption speed increases rapidly in a short period of time while the speed is very slow after 15min; it increases with the cycle number increasing, but it essentially unchanged. In addition, the higher filler layer is, the better absorption efficiency is.(3) According to L25 (56) orthogonal table, four factors, i.e., spraying volume of waste lube oil, entrance volume of waste gas, operation temperature, initial concentration of Xylene, are optimal and recombinant. The result show that the major factor is operation temperature, whereas the secondary is spraying volume and entrance volume. When the operation temperature of 15℃,spraying volume is 36 L/h, entrance volume is 0.116 m3/h, concentration of Xylene is 1100 mg/m3,the absorption efficiency is best. The verification experiment results showed that treatment of waste lubricating oil absorption efficiency of xylene emissions as high as 95.2%, a very good absorption. The research method not only has the advantage of occupying less equipments, investing less fund, higher efficient and lower oprating cost, but also nobody domestic reseached it, therefore, the study of its industrialization has certain theoretical significance.
