Amending specifications according to buildings and structures of the damage characteristics under rupture earthquake is the common practice in the seismic code amendments。This paper based on the earthquake investigation to failure modes of gravity retaining wall along the G213 zipingpu-wenchuan section level 3 highway and combining with indoor large shaking table test, valuates the earth pressure and distribution schema on gravity retaining wall under earthquake in Chinese current railway and highway seismic code of retaining structures。Hope to provide reference for the seismic code amendments of retaining structures。The content and results of this study are as follows:1) Through the survey in wenchuan earthquake, we found that displacement modes of retaining wall on soil foundation are really complex, compared to the great majority modes as overturned deformation and middle wall body protruding, shear deformation outside of retaining wall on rock foundation. It still exist the deformation of the whole wall goes on; the lower goes outside and the upper displacement not evident. In the seismic design of retaining structures, displacement of retaining structures should be controlled within 1.0%。2) Utilizing the large shaking table test, obtained the seismic anticipating pressure and distribution schema applied on the gravity retaining wall based on soil site and what packing with weathered granite, gravel soils and quartz sand. It found that under the action of strong earthquake, the retaining wall in test occurred displacement mode like that in wenchuan earthquake, and with obvious phenomenon of wall-soil separation, cause the soil pressure measurement is smaller than the standard calculating pressure in seismic design code, but the high of application point change little.3) The seismic soil pressure of gravity retaining wall is non-linear distribution along the wall and bigger upside。The peak pressure is near the top of the wall。As the magnitude increases, the peak acceleration of earthquake become the main controlling factors of seismic soil pressure magnitude and distribution。4) By compared the test measured with the design codes calculated seismic soil pressure safety factors of GRW. Show that to the soil foundation retaining wall, the seismic soil pressure calculated by current seismic design codes can meet the engineering needs of seismic design, If small displacement of retaining wall can be allowed in retaining wall design for earthquake zone; adopting filling material of the back wall which presents greater internal friction angle and better self-stable ability may reduce the seismic soil pressure.
