With the development of economy in our country, the car ownership increases year byyear and the traffic pressure in city road is getting more and more serious. Expressway as animportant part of city road, the first premise of urban development is its fast, efficient andsecurity. And the traffic sign is part of the expressway system. With the traffic volumeincrease in expressway, the expressway system often encounters many problems, such as roadtraffic chaos, the speed is not to standard, the level of information is not clear, the distance ofthe exit and entrance is too small, the organization of access conflict with the traffic signs, theviews of the traffic sign is blocked. So in order to solve these problems, the research on thescientific setting of traffic signs has become an urgent project.The scientific evaluation of expressway traffic signs relies on its accordance with thedriver’s visibility and driving requirement. Beginning with the study of driver’s cognitivecharacteristics, the procedure of driver’s recognition of sign was analyzed and density ofdistribution was put forward to meet with the driver’s mental activity patterns. Thereafter,taking into consideration, researches on the probability of setting signs along the roadsideand along the middle of the road were conducted respectively,making it available inpractical application.To improve the sign reading rate and information efficiently, redundant technique and theselection of oriented place information were employed to explore the setting method of trafficsign in expressway. By means of redundant technique, concerning the cognitivecharacteristics, formula on redundancy and space between expressway traffic signs wasobtained, and information Hierarchical classification were applied in the method of theselection of oriented place information, and the setting method of redundant spacing wereproposed via comprehensive consideration of methods mentioned above and the distributionof expressway traffic signs.In addition, the scheme of freeway signs designed in management is conductive toalleviate the traffic pressure. The basic scheme is determined based on traffic survey, then thefuzzy comprehensive evaluation model is used to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses ofdifferent scheme, finally, combined with the actual road conditions and the driver’s visibility to make some research and regulations to the layout and location of signs.In the end, through the analysis of the Second Ring Road between Yanta interchange andChang’an interchange and the restrict road network of perimeter zone in xi’an. The method ofthe selection of oriented place information, the setting method of redundant spacing and fuzzysynthetic evaluation method were used in analyzing the traffic signs in this area.
