Facing the increasingly serious problem of environmental pollution and resourceshortages, hybrid vehicles, with their low-emission, high specific energy and highspecific power, combines the advantages of both traditional internal combustion enginevehicle and electric vehicle. Hence, it is regarded as the most effective solution toenergy consumption and environmental protection issues of auto industry. How toimprove its fuel economy is a significant topic which draws shared concern of both autocompanies and general customers.This research project is based on a mini van produced by Changan AutomobileGroup Co., Ltd. It tries to build up the vehicle mathematic model and operationsimulation model using MATLB/Simulink to calculate the fuel economy under both citydrive condition and freeway condition. Then is compares the calculation results with thecar’s real fuel economy indicators so that to testify the accuracy of the model. Underthis foundation, it builds up a series hybrid electric vehicle model (SHEV). Then enginestart stop or battery SOC control strategy is applied on this model, simulating andcalculating the cars fuel consumption under city drive and freeway conditions.Comparing with the original car’s data, we found that the fuel consumption drops by39.18%under city drive condition, while increases by20%under freeway condition.Finally, this project studies the influence of changing battery system to the fuel economy.It finds out that NiMH battery is better than VRLA battery, while Lithium-ion battery isbetter than NiMH battery.The main problems and completedtasksin these articles are as follows:①It builds up the vehicle model and operation simulation model of a mini vanand researches on fuel economy in urban and high-speed driving condition, andtestified the efficiency of the simulation model.②It compares three different types of hybrid cars. Setting the mini van as theoriginal model, modify it into a series hybrid electric vehicle through theoreticalcalculation and parameter configuration of different parts of the vehicle.③It builds up the operation simulation model of SHEV. By applying engine startstop or battery SOC control strategy, it simulates and calculates the fuel economy undercity drive and freeway drive condition. The result shows that the fuel economy becomesbetter than then original car under city drive condition, while becomes worse under freeway drive condition.④This article also studies the impact of changing vehicle battery system to fueleconomy. It finds out that Lithium-ion battery is the best, NiMH battery closely follows,while VRLA battery ranks the last.
