Based on the overall review of aerothomalelastic analysis and its application in practicalengineering, this paper presents a aerothermal-aeroelastic two-way coupling method for predicting theaerothomalelastic phenomena of an insulated metallic plate in hypersonic flow. The main researchwork is dividided into five parts:Firstly, approximate hypersonic aerodynamics model of a panel is formulated by combing thethird-order piston theory and the Eckert’s reference enthalpy. This model includes the impact ofstructural deformation on aerodynamic heating which is an essential feature of the two-way coupling.Secondly, analytical methods are used to develop thermal and structural models of a semi-infinite,insulated metallic panel which considering material property degration problems and uniformtemperature distribution problems.Verifications of each model are performed separately.Thirdly,a two-way coupling aerothermoelastic model of the insulated metallic plate bycombining the separate aerothermal, heat transfer, and structural models is addressed. Theseaerothermoelastic studies focus on identifying the accurancy differences between one-way couplingand two-way coupling, and evaluating the efficiency of simplified temporal couplingapproaches,namely:1)flutter boundary prediction,2)nonlinear flutter response,and3)dynamicallystable response. It is found that including elastic deformations in the heating computations results innonuniform heat flux, which produces nonuniform temperature distributions and propertydegradations, and thus impacts nonlinear flutter reponse, which should be pay more attention to in thehypersonic vehicle design.Fourthly, extend the two-way coupling approach to finite analysis by the aid of Isight.Qussi-static aerothermalelastic analysises are carried out, and the results agree well with theanalytical methods. It demonstrated that this method has laid the foundation for practical engeering.
