Manufacturing and assembly bring variability to practical dynamic behavior of mechanical structures, compared with original nominal design. Such uncertainties cannot be taken into consideration withtraditional optimization methodologies which are deterministic, while narrowing tolerance can bequite difficult and expensive. To achieve small variability under uncertainties, robust design must beused, application of which in dynamics is still in initial phase. Robust design methodology ofstructural dynamics and its application are studied in this paper. The research is divided into twostages. The first stage is based on the systemetic design concept of parameter design and tolerancedesign of Taguchi’s method. Initial design space is narrowed through parameter design, andmulti-objective optimization is used in tolerance design to improve the ability of Taguchi’s method todeal with problems with multi objectives. In the second stage, Response Surface Method (RSM) indynamic problem is studied, and applied in robust design methodology. After parameter design, RSMis used in the narrowed design space for optimization afterwards. Robust design for assemblyparameters of high pressure compressor in areo-engine, and assembly parameters of jointed casings ofareo-engine are carried out in this paper, to correspondingly verify methodologies studied in bothstages. Further more, robust design of initial unbalanced discs assembly for a twin-spool aero engineis carried out to further clarify application of such methods in practical engineering design.
