In recent years, China’s road transport development has made brilliant achievements, butroad transport safety has also become a focus of widespread community concern. Accordingto incomplete statistics, roadside accidents accounted for about1/3of the total number oftraffic accidents occurred each year in our country, and the proportion of casualties andproperty losses caused by roadside accidents was significantly more than the proportion of thenumber of roadside accidents, and the national and provincial trunk highways in mountainareas were even more serious. At present, the domestic security research focuses on thehighways, and less involves the roadside security in mountain areas. Therefore, it isparticularly urgent and important to accelerate the development of roadside traffic safetyresearch on national and provincial trunk highways in mountainous areas, and then to madeimprovement suggestions or reasonable and feasible approach. The paper made in-depth analysis of the roadside accidents distribution based on thecharacteristics of the trunk highways in mountain areas, and analyzed the main factors thatimpacted roadside traffic safety on the basis of systems theory method from four areasinvolved the people, vehicles, roads and adverse weather conditions. The paper combined ofresearch and domestic trunk highways feature in mountain areas, and presented the improvedrecommendations and methods in line with the real situation based on the analysis of therelationship between roadside factors (clearance width, slope, shoulder, roadside guardrail)and security. In premise of ensuring the roadside safety and from the perspective of maximumcost-effectiveness, the paper proposed the roadside low cost traffic safety facilities that werein line with the status of trunk highways safety in mountain areas, such as shoulder rumble, roadside signs, guardrails, and the currently used disintegration energy dissipation facilities.
