Leaf spring is commonly used in automobile independent suspension, it is notonly the elastic part, but also the part that transfers the longitudinal and side force oftire, so that the leaf spring have to withstand forces from all aspects. Complex workenvironment determines the design of leaf spring must consider the issues of relility, otherwise it may appear fatigue fracture. Meanwhile, the design of leaf spring is alsoaffect ride comfort and safety of the vehicle. But the leaf spring is not only withcomplex structure, but with the ever-changing forces state and friction factors. All ofthis led the design of leaf spring become more and more difficult. However, thesuccessful use of CAE provides a new method to solve such problems.Firstly, the author introduce the general design procedure of leaf spring, Andthen discuss several conventional design methods which are point pressure method, common curvature method, combination method and finite element method. After thatthe author decided to choose the method of nonlinear finite element as the basis forthis study.By the means of testing, simulating the actual load conditions of the leaf springin the laboratory. The author got the vertical static stiffness and dynamic stiffness ofthe leaf spring after fitting of the experimental results. For the normal and abnormal assembled leaf spring, Considering largedeformation, interleaf friction and contact simultaneously, the nonlinear module ofABAQUS are used, the author obtain the stress distribution and stiffness, and judgewhether the design of the leaf spring meets the design requirements. In this article, the author considered not only the static analysis, but also thedynamic simulation. Based on the results, the effect on the hysteresis and dampingcharacteristics of the leaf spring by the nonlinear factors were discussed.
