Process running in earth dam, dam seepage is automatically generated internally. It notonly cause loss of head, but will also cause water pressure and the resulting dam materialstrength decreases, leading to landslides, even on bad dam. This caused a huge threat to thenational economy, people’s lives and the environment. Such damage often having sudden, theuse of traditional theory can not solve this problem well. For such embankment dam’ssystems with a heightly complex and nonlinear characteristics to its instability to predict andcontrol, it need to undertake a break from nonlinear science, and catastrophe theory isimportant branch of nonlinear science. Catastrophe theory mainly study that why nonlinearsystem tend towards system character catastrophe from continuous gradual change state, andit is suitable for the role of unknown internal systems. Therefore, catastrophe theory is a usefultool for solving modern nonlinear problems. After considering a complex and nonlinear characteristics composed of earth dam systemin this paper,it mainly launched in the following four aspects of work.Firstly, according to software ANSYS, it established the two-dimensional finite elementmodel of earth dam.using the seepage finite element calculation program and stress finiteelement calculation were analysised the earth dam seepage. On this basis, strength reduction method of finite element was carried out finite elementnumerical simulation for the earth and rockfill dam based on the calculation of finite elementanalysis,so as to get the plastic strain energy, yield zone area, and entropy in the scope ofrockfill dam slope under different strength parameter. The paper further with catastrophe theory and strength reduction finite elementmethod. It illuminated variation of the plastic strain, yield zone area, entropy and changingrule of strength reduction factor within the scope of dam slope for earth-rock dam.Itestablished the slope instability criterion based on catastrophe theory, revealed the slopeinstability mechanism for earth-rock dam, and described the slope instability process forearth-rock dam. Finally, the instability criterion based on catastrophe theory was applied to theengineering example, through discriminant to get stability safety coefficient and the stabilitystate of the upstream and downstream slope for earth-rock dam. At the same time, thecalculation results were compared with the results of the traditional limit equilibrium method, using catastrophe theory stability analysis results was consistent with the results of thesimplified bishop method.it proved the validity of the analysis of earth and rockfill damstability, and provided a new way for stability calculation of earth and rockfill dam.
