With the development of the national economy, the installed capacity of electric power increases, which lead to the power grid transmission pressure increasing. As a new transmission mode, superconducting cable has a lot of advantages that traditional transmission does not have, so the proportion of the distribution network transmission is increasing year by year. The main advantage of superconducting cable in high current density and transmission capacity may be first applied in large capacity power supply in the city. On one hand, the application is decided on the maturity maturity maturity of technology and economy, on the other hand, depends on the proper selection of objects.The HTS cable is a kind of power facility that takes the materials without resistance and can transmission high current density as the superconductor materials and is able to carry large current. The HTS cable has the advantages of small volume, light weight, low loss and high transmission capacity, so it can be achieved with low loss, high efficiency, and large capacity transmission. For example, under the conditions of the same section, the HTS cable may carry three to five times more than conventional cable power. However, with the gradual application of superconducting cables, there are many new problems on power system reliability. It is necessary to evaluate the reliability of power supply after the application of the superconducting cable system, to ensure the power supply reliability.This paper mainly studies if it would affect the reliability of the power grid when the HTS cable access to the grid. Firstly, started with the form of the superconducting cable system, we study on the basic characteristics amd the critical parameters of the superconducting cable system, then put forward to the quench detection method of superconductors. Secondly, we come up with an improved reliability assessment method through the research of the traditional reliability evaluation method. Then the reliability of HTS cable access to the grid is evaluated, and the safety and stability analysis is made to the access of the superconducting cable system to the gird,which is based on the quench protection methods of superconductors. Finally, through the example of a regional power grid, on one hand to compare the reliability of conventional cable and superconducting cables when access to the grid; on the other hand, to do simulation calculation about the normal and the quench states of the superconducting cable based on the same faults, therefore we come to a conclusion of the reliability of the HTS cable access to the grid.
