Converter valve is the core equipment in the converter station, the heavy current in operation will produce a lot of heat which will cause the thyristor and reactor temperature rising. Valve cooling system is designed to solve this question.In this paper, valve cooling system from different manufacturers will be studied and analyzed deeply, the history of converter fault is also concerned. These can help the operators to understand the structure of HVDC valve cooling system, and provides reliable guidance of fault analyzing and handling. Through the comparison on the advantages and disadvantages of the various valve cooling technology, so as to achieve the aim of complement each other.The main contents of this paper:1, Based on the analysis of ABB and GAOLAN valve cooling technology, introduces the present situation and the basic functions of valve cooling technology, that leads to the research direction and significance;2, According to the situation in DC converter station field, introduces the hardware components of valve cooling system. Focusing on the main circuit hardware function of inner and outer cooling system. Two typical ways of outer water treatment principles will be analyzed deeply.3, In this chapter, as examples of Huaxin converter station and Fengjing converter station, introduces the composition of the valve cooling control system. Attention will be payed to the difference of valve cooling control system between ABB and GAOLAN techonlogy. The main circulation pump switching logic and cooling tower switching logic are the further topic to be discussed.4, Combined with the engineering application of Nanqiao converter station and Jiaodong converter station, introduces the principle and function of valve cooling protection system. The relevant requirements of the valve cooling protection setting will be introduced in detail. The DC system locking accident happened in Gaoling converter station is exactly due to an unreasonable protection setting and that is a good summary for this chapter.
