The research of steel bridge deck paving is originated from Germany. Since1990s, the application and research of steel bridge deck paving in China have gone through more than ten years, which can be divided into three stages. The first stage is started from1997to2002, introducing and absorbing advanced technologies from foreign countries. The second stage is started from2003to2007, improving and optimizing these technologies based on the experiences and lessons gathered from the previous stage. The third stage is started from2008until now, when the application and research of steel bridge deck paving trend to be perfect.There are mainly three systems of steel bridge deck paving in China, which respectively are Gussasphalt concrete system, epoxy asphalt concrete system and modified asphalt SMA system. In this study, we have done the following researches in order to understand the actual performances of the three paving systems.〢nalyze the characteristics of steel bridge deck and the relevance with pavement disease. Command the service condition of steel bridge deck pavement by mechanical calculation. And analyze therelevance between the stress situation of steel bridge pavement structure and pavement disease.〤onduct plenty of investigations about steel bridge deckpavement diseaseand analyze its reasons.I investigate the service conditions of the pavement of tens of large span steel bridges in the regions along the middle and lower reaches of Changjiang River. The results show that the performance of Gussasphalt concrete system is superior to other paving systems. Gussasphalt system is mature with good stability and excellent adaptability to steel bridge deck. Generally, no collapsing deteriorations such as steel plate corrosions will occur. As a paving material with good quality, epoxy asphalt concrete is supposed to perform better. But this paving system haven’t achieved its expected performance due to the influence of the factors such as construction, maintenance and the complexity and variability of steel bridge deck. Furthermore, this paving system has problems such as structure defect, difficult to repair the deteriorations and bad repair effect etc.. The double layers of SMA in modified asphalt SMA system are suitable for bridges with high stiffness and better traffic conditions. ERS system has just been applied in China for a short time. Some engineering projects show good performance while others perform not well enough with many problems yet to be solved. ③At last, put forward improved design proposal, disease treatment and preventive maintenance measures respectively to every pavement disease caused by different pavement (structure) design.
