Relaying protection is the first defense line to ensure safe operation of large power grids. Its performance plays an important role in the security and stability of the power system operation. The traditional relaying protection based on local information, which cannot make the fast and accurate control strategy to guarantee the safe and stable operation of the power grid from the perspective of the whole system. Wide-area relaying protection based on wide-area multipoint information is an effective method to solve this problem.Existing wide-area fault identification algorithm based on single fault direction information cannot identify the fault fast and accurately in the case of missing or incorrect information, as the low reliability of single amount of information. Based on the existing algorithm, distance protection information of section I and section II are adopted to form comprehensive protection discriminant matrix. Moreover, lines and buses fault criterion are proposed in this paper to identify the component fault. The case analysis show the improvement of fault-tolerant compared with the single amount of information due to the increase of information.With the development of measurement technology and artificial intelligence technology, wide-area backup protection Intelligent algorithms become the current hot topic. Current genetic algorithm faulty component identification algorithm based on the use of information fusion main protection action, action information from protection, fault direction information for the three groups fault identification information. Due to the use of many types of references and information on genetic algorithm, the algorithm has high fault tolerance and accuracy. On this basis, through the analysis of various scope of protection, and the logical relationship between them, improved wide-area backup protection fault identification mathematical model, the simulation analysis, a mathematical model under the condition of multi-component failures, but also correct fault identification. Ant colony algorithm with the genetic algorithm, but also a optimization algorithm, and its performance has a positive feedback, the ant colony algorithm for fault identification, when the information is missing or wrong circumstances, still be able to correctly and quickly identify faulty components. By comparing the simulation of the genetic algorithm and ant colony algorithm found wide-area backup protection algorithm based on ant colony algorithm genetic algorithm than shorter, less astringent algebra, to better meet the needs of a wide area backup protection system.
