Based on the current urban square space problem in China and previous studies or related theories about behavior patterns and basic constituents of an urban square, we explored behavior patterns in a public square, dissected the influence mechanism between behavior and public space, and thereby offer proposals for better urban square design and management. A typical urban square, Changsha Xingsha Tongcheng Plaza, was selected as our study area. Systemic investigation, interview and in-depth analysis from the angles of sociology, urban planning and praxeology were conducted. We followed the steps, theory-practice-theory, and selected various methods to discuss user behavior in an urban square. Field investigation was conducted to analyze the physical space and psychic space in an urban square space. A questionnaire, interview, behavior observation, and digital images were carried out to examine user behavior in the space. An intermittent photo survey was performed for figuring out the spatial distribution patterns of user behavior. Then the survey data were processed by Excel and SPSS. We compared user behavior and its influence factors in Tongcheng Plaza and Furong Plaza which are typical urban square in Changsha several kilometers away. Instead of studying user behavior and public space separately, we combined the two and examined user behavior patterns in a comprehensive method. The main results were as follows:the three basic constituents for urban square space--users, space, and behavior--interact with each other. Their harmony and unity can bring vitality to the public square. On the other hand, user, behavior and space can lead to a harmonious environment. A well-planned public square can provide superior space for users and raise awareness of the usefulness of well-planned public space. Thus, urban square construction should not only focus on physical space, but also psychic space. Ideally, urban square space and user behavior are inseparable and interactional.
