This paper focuses on solving the problem that is led by the ignorance of the effects of top beam on the design of the retaining and protection structure for excavations,by comparing the result of data from real exam and data from the analysis result of finite element software based on top beam for soldier pile as research example and an excavations in Changsha as project example. The analysis result of finite element software is proved to be reliable and the influence and effects of the top beam on soldier pile are investigated based on the fem software by simulating several other conditions, which lead to several conclusions of significanceThe method to retaining and protection structure is introduced firstly in this paper, after which several flaws in the current design proceeding are pointed out, while the research content and method are introduced by summarizing the research achievement in china and abroad so far. After introducing the method to investigate the retaining and protection structure for excavations by taking the effect of top beam into consideration, the results of deformation of pile’s body from the analysis based on finite element software abaqus and real exam are compared and investigated to illustrate the accuracy and reliability of the analysis based on finite element method. Then the several conditions are designed, by not taking pile into consideration and taking piles of different stiffness into consideration, to clarify the effects of top beam on soldier pile. Significant conclusions are summarized.The constraining effect of the top beam on soldier pile can reduce the horizontal deformation of soldier pile, while it is efficient to limit the defamation of soldier pile by increase the stiffness of top beam.
