In recent years, motorcoach fire occurred frequently all over the world, which not only results serious casualties and property losses, but also brought caused severe social influence. Researching the occurrence and development of coach fire and improving safety performance of coach under fire is necessary. This paper studied the flame spread and smoke movement characteristics of coach fire under different openings, fire locations, wind conditions and effect of water mist by numerical means with FDS. Based on the simulation results, appropriate measures were presented. Main works of the paper are as following:(1) Based on the fire load distribution of typical coach, geometric and physical model of coach was established with FDS. Accuracy of FDS simulation was verifies by a comparison between the simulation result and experiment result.(2) The influence on flame and smoke spread by different openings, fire locations, wind and outing of water mist were summarized by simulation models. An equation for estimating peak heat release rate in coach fire was proposed based on oxygen consumption principle. Moreover, the critical wind speed who influented the movement of smoke were obtained through both theoretical analysis and numerical simulation.(3) The flashover time and available safe egress time under different scenarios can be acquired through the simulation results. Results also indicate that the available safe egress time is less than1min under flashover cases.(4) An accident causation model on coach fire was established on the basis of both accident-causing theory analysis and the simulation results. Meanwhile, a series of countermeasure and suggestions were presented aiming at different fire phases.This paper analysised the fire cause, fire simulation and fire prevention. Then, a further research on coach fire can be developed on account of the results of the paper. Furthermore, the results can be referred by design and safety technology of coach.
