Centrifugal fan belongs to the category of rotating machinery, which is also the mainenergy-consuming equipment. The improvement of the centrifugal fan performance and reduceenergy consumption, has become an important subject for many universities and researchinstitutes. NUMECA software is utilized to calculate and analysis the internal three-dimensionalflow field of G4-73№8D centrifugal fan, which is transformed before and after.The geometry of different fans is modeled in IGG and the numerical simulation of fans isdone with FINE. The performance of different fans operating at designed point is compared andthe best position of the impeller is given. The flow field of the original fan and the best impellercenter position fan is simulated with variable conditions. The best impeller center fan has bestperformance relative to the original with the performance curve of variable conditions compared.The fans get improved significantly. It is found that the original fan has poor radial adaptationbetween the volute and impeller under variable conditions.According to the adaption between the volute and the impeller, the volute radius is improved,and the optimization of the volute radius is proposed. Genetic algorithm is applied and the bestresult of the optimization is given by MATLAB. According to different area factors, the volutewithout area constraint and the volute with area constraint are designed.The numerical results show that: the volute with area constraint has the best performance.Compared with original solution, all the considered flow rate, the average static pressure of theoptimal solution are improved about0.404kPa, average efficiency are improved by about5.91%.It verifies that MF has the best radial adaptation between the volute and impeller under variableconditions.
