Frost heaving failure of canal is the key restricting factor for the development of watersaving agriculture and seepage engineering technology in the seasonal frozen-earth districts ofnorthern China. This paper summarized the influencing factors of frost heaving failure ofcanal based on the analysis of our country’s research and application of canal insulation andfrost heave control, raised a standardized structural type of canal seepage control, insulationand frost heave control and determined its application condition and range, established astandardized structural type of canal seepage control, insulation and frost heave control anddetermined its application condition and range,established a calculation formula of insulationthickness based on the thermal resistance equivalent principle by the analysis of investigationmaterials and test results of canal insulation frost heave control, used test data analyzing andverification the rationality of calculation formula. The main research results as follows:(1) The test data of insulation frost heave control in Hamatong irrigation area inHeilongjiang province shows that the seepage lining channel without taking insulationmeasures, the temperature of canal foundation is greatly influenced by the fluctuation ofoutside temperature during the freezing and amplitude violent daily, it’s a large amplitude forthe amplitude of soil layer temperature during the freezing process and the quantity of frostheave is high. The insulation seepage lining channel has little effects by the fluctuation ofoutside temperature during the freezing and has little amplitude changes more gentle and thequantity of frost heave is low. It indicates that laying insulation board has an obvious effectand effectively prevents or decreases the frost heaving damage of channel.(2) This paper established a standardized structural type of canal seepage control andinsulation frost heave control, including the standardized structural type and its applicationcondition and range. Deciding that the measures of insulation frost heave control is effectivelyto prevent the frost heaving damage of channel. It is suitable for frost heaving soil and thelarge and middle rigid lining channel of badly frost heaving damaged or the level ofgroundwater is lower than canal base in the seasonal frozen-earth districts, also it is suitablefor the area of lack or expensive of sandy gravel and coarse sand.(3) According to the standardized structural type of canal seepage control and insulationfrost heave control, established a calculation formula of insulation thickness based on the thermal resistance equivalent principle, determined the method of parameters selecting duringthe calculation process. Using the test data of insulation frost heave control in Hamatongirrigation area takes the verification of calculation formula shows that the results of thecalculation formula is much equates than the test optimal insulation thickness, the results alsoshows that has some rationality and reliability, the calculation formula of insulation thicknesscan be suitable for the design of insulation frost heaving control in the northeast district. It’simportant to the popularization and application of the technology of canal seepage control,insulation and frost heave control in the seasonal frozen-earth districts.
