As the essential part of automobile,the performance of the braking systemdirectly effects the safety features of a car. In the prosperous developing automotiveindustry, improving the braking performance of automobile has been the primary taskfor designers to ensure the traffic safety. On the condition of brake workingperformance is safe and reliable. It is of significant importance to improve the designmethod in order to improve its efficiency, shorten its design cycle and reduce the itsdesign cost.This paper studied the methods of parametric design for drum brake, and itsmodeling and secondary development were finished, also analyzed its structuralperformance through simulation analysis. The main works are as following:1. Introduced the development history, main function and development trend ofComputer Aided Design, summarized the application situation and scientific researchstatus of CAD technology in varies fields at domestic and abroad.2. Describes the knowledge of brake system, introduced different kinds of brake.This paper mainly studied leading trailing shoe brake, introduced its structurecomponents and working principle, and also its design and calculation methods.3. Introduced the3D design software CATIA V5. Proposed the idea andprinciple of3D parametric design, described parametric design method of drum brake.And then the3D models of the main brake parts for Dongfeng EQ140truck wereestablished by CATIA.4. Described the concept of CATIA secondary development, introduced themethods and procedures of CATIA secondary development by programming.Secondary development design of drum brake was finished by using VB access toCATIA.5. Imported the drum brake models established in CATIA to ANSYS, definedtheir unit type and material properties, completed models mesh and added load,finished the contact finite element analysis, obtained the stress distribution anddisplacement distribution of each components on drum brake. Finally proposed theimprovement suggestions for brake structure, and provide theoretical basis for the optimization design.
