As our society gradually becomes aging, the demands for wheelchairs become larger andlarger in China. However the wheelchairs’ control system is so complex and its price is sohigh in global market that ordinary people can’t conveniently use and afford it. According tothis situation, combining the electric wheelchair with the popular、multifunctional andgrowing cheaper smartphones, this paper proposes a new wheelchair human-computerinteraction and control systems-the Control System of Wheelchair Based on AndroidSmartphone. On the basis of the electric wheelchair, by transforming the hardware andprograming software, this paper designs a wheelchair control system, using Android smartphone as the human-computer interactive interface and client processor, which has merits ofeasy to operate, relatively inexpensive, various control methods, feature-rich system andwidely using range.First, this paper analyzes the project’s research background, purpose and significance,proposing a concept of wheelchair control system based on Android smartphone andintroducing the research status in this domestic and foreign about intelligent wheelchaircontrol system and smartphones.Then, by analyzing the function requirements of wheelchair control system, this paperdesigns the hardware transformation programs and control programs of the control system,and concludes an overall design program of the control system.In the part of hardware, this paper elaborates the transformation design of control systemhardware, including hardware components, the selection of main hardware type and criticalcircuit design. The microcontroller is used to control the motor drive, and Wi-Fi module isused to achieve communication between the phone and the microcontroller, receiving thecontrol commands from user’s smartphone.In the part of software, this paper elaborates control system software design. Consideringthe system’s stability and reliability, it uses the modular-design method to design themicrocontroller’s program and Android client program. It separates the various functions intoseveral child parts. By this way, it can be structured and lucid. By programmingmicrocontroller, it realizes the hardware initialization, sensor signal acquisition, UART communication and receiving input signal to control motor drive. In the part of programmingAndroid client, it realizes Wi-Fi communication, control operation such as touch-screenbuttons control, touch-screen slide control, mobile posture control and offline voicerecognition control by combining the various sensors in smartphone. It also realizes the GPSpositioning map, compass and remote alarm in case of falling.Finally, by debugging and testing the control system, the experiments confirm thefeasibility of wheelchair control system based on Android smartphone.
