The current energy situation is quite grim in China. Energy conservation, reducingenergy consumption and improving energy utilization efficiency are the inevitable measuresto solve the energy problems. It is of great significance to China for the achievement of thestrategic objectives of energy reduction that industrial sector, as a major energy-consumingareas, improves its energy efficiency and waste heat recycling level, follows the principle ofmeeting the temperature requirement and cascaded utilization, evaluates reasonably andmakes full use of the waste heat, especially the one in low temperature.Available potential is a new thermodynamic state variable which can be used tocharacterize the maximum capacity for doing available work of the circulating workingfluid in a certain state. Available potential’s unit is same with the internal energy, enthalpyand exergy, so that it can offer a more intuitive and more comprehensive evaluation of thequality of the waste heat resources, especially the ones that contain latent heat and pressureenergy. Therefore, it is an effective complement to using available potential to evaluate thecharacter of the industrial waste heat other than temperature. In this paper, availablepotential of some typical industrial waste heat resources like vapor and the industrial smokeis calculated. The quality and the recovery value of the industrial waste heat resources areestimated, too. The higher available potential is, the stronger ability of doing work theresource gets, as well as the higher grade of the resource and the greater the potential forrecycling.Thermodynamic available potential, as a quantitative evaluation indicators, can also beused to establish the industrial waste heat utilization quantitative principles and evaluatequantificationally the grade of the industrial waste heat. The cost and the value of wasteheat resources recycling is calculated quantificationally in this essay. The thermodynamicseconomic analysis of industrial waste heat recovery is also studied aiming at providing areference method for building the quantitative standards for the cascade utilization ofindustrial waste heat using the thermodynamic potential analysis.Thermodynamic available potential is also appropriate for the Selection of the working medium of the Organic Rankine Cycle. The design of the Organic Rankine Cycleexperiment device is finished in this paper, which can support the available potential theoryanalysis for the principles of choosing the working medium, cascade utilization ofindustrial waste heat and thermal performance of the recovery device.
