Due to insure that the structure can have enough ductility behaviour in order toreach the requirement of the principle under the seismic design which according tocapacity design philosophy, the failure mode of reinforced concrete (RC) piercolumns should be avoid to britle failure under lateral force. However, there werea great difference between current design code and theorectical research as resultof the complexity of the shear strength under earthquake action. This paper amis toinvestigate the shear strength of the RC pier columns under earthquake action,Both theorectical study and regression of the experimental results are involved inthe investigation. The main achievements can be summarized as follows:a. The progress on the relevant theoretical and experimental research in homeand abroad was systematically reviewed firstly, and the shear theories andequations of current codes were compared. Then taking a typical test model forexample, to discuss the results of different equations related to different factors.b. According to modified truss-arch mode, a simplified theoretical formula wasdeveloped to predict the shear strength by considering softening factor of concrete,angles of concrete diagonal web between truss and arch mode.c. Based on regression analysis of the results of54pier columns shear failuremodels, a semi-theoretical formula for calculating the shear strength outsideplastic hinge zone of RC pier columns was derived.d. Considering the reduction of shear strength provided by concrete under cyclicloading, based on regression analysis of the results of71pier columns shear-bending failure models, a semi-theoretical formula for calculating the shearstrength inside plastic hinge zone of RC pier columns was derived.e. By comparing the formula to those of the current codes, the result shows thatthe semi-theory and semi-experience formula is more access to the matter of facts. f. A practical design formula with a certain guaranteed rate of reliability wasdeveloped based on the semi-theory and semi-experience formula.
