When a ship sails along a bank in restricted waters, it may be influencedby the bankeffect, which shows that the bank’s restriction will affect the flowand further change the hydrodynamic forces acting on the ship. Thisbankeffect can cause the ship to have a sway and yaw motion tendency, and ifno approperiate control is applied, this may lead to the danger of ship-bankcollision, grounding or ship-ship collision. Thus it is of great importance tostudy the hydrodynamics of a ship sailing along a bank.In this thesis, a numerical method based on solving the RANS equationsis adopted to simulate the viscous flow around a ship sailing along a bank. The turbulence is modeled by the SST k-ωmodel and the free-surface wavesinduced by the ship are simulated with VOF method. The realiability of thisnumerical method is examined by simulating the straight and oblique towingtests. The examination includes iteration convergenceanalysis, gridconvergence study, and error analysis with comparison between calculationresults and test data. Then this numerical method is applied to simulate theflow around a ship sailing straightly or obliquely along a bank, and thehydrodynamic mechanism is discussed through analysis of the forces actingon the hull and the detailed flow field. Meanwhile, influences of differentfactors such as ship-bank distance, drift angle, water depth and bankgeometry are systemically analyzed. Based on the analysis of the shiphydrodynamics, a control strategy is proposed for the ship sailing in therestricted waters. The numerical method adopted in this thesis can properly simulate theviscous free-surface flow around a ship sailing in restricted waters. Theconclusionsabout thebank effecton a ship in straight ahead motion and thehydrodynamics of a ship in oblique motionhavereference values for similarstudies. In addition, the summary of different factors’ influence on shiphydrodynamics and the control strategyproposed for ships sailing in restrictedwaters can be helpful to the waterway designers and the ship operators...
