Structure with suspended mass is a common type of structure in manyengineering applications. Suspended mass in this kind of structure system has threepurposes: for one purpose, it was used as a kind of construction modality, such asHSBC Main Building, or suspension-mass pendulums in tall buildings to adjuststructural frequency, such as Taipei101; for another purpose, to meet the structuraland technological requirements, such as large mass rectifier valves groups in valvehalls or pendant boiler in coal-fired power plants. The advantage of this kind ofstructure system on the seismic performance is very obvious in the past earthquakedisasters. But in the past seismic response analysis, only the influence of thehorizontal earthquake action was taken into consideration, and ignoring the effect ofswinging ground motion. The reason to use such methods of seismic design is lackingof analysis methods under coupling of horizontal and rocking earthquake.In fact,rocking ground motion produced by dynamic effect is very significant. In this paper,through earthquake simulation shaking table test and finite element analysis, weresearch the seismic behavior of structures with suspended mass undermulti-dimensional earthquake. The main research work and achievements in thispaper are as follows.Firstly, this paper introduces model design of the earthquake simulation shakingtable. According to the characteristic ofprototype, present condition of the lab and thesimilar theory, we design the1/10scale model which can change frequency of steelframe structure by changing mass in counterweight box and change condition ofsuspension and pendulum length.Secondly, to simulate dynamic action of suspension mass structure undermultidimensional earthquake and studymultidimensional earthquake under the actionof dynamic response of suspension mass structure, to study the seismic performanceof structure seismic behavior. The horizontal waves which are Pacoima dam seismicrecords of Northridge earthquake in1994are selected as applied load. The rockingwaves are earthquake shake pendulum component got by improved method. Threecombinations of seismic component are selected as load. Some importantexperimental results have been gained by measurement including the dynamiccharacter of the whole structure and dynamic response of acceleration, then thedisplacement is got by integration to acceleration, and emphatically investigatesinfluence of steel cable or spring and length of hanging mass to dynamic response of the structure and cable internal forces is studied under multi-dimensional earthquakeaction.Thirdly, before and after model making, finite element simulation analysis wascarried out. Influence of suspended mass, steel cable or spring and different length ofhanging mass to dynamic response of the structure and cable internal forces is studiedunder multi-dimensional earthquake action. Comparing analysis results withexperimental resultsto verify the feasibility of test scheme and correctness of theresult.
