Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer(CFRP) has the characteristics of high specificstrength and specific stiffness, light weight, high temperature resistance and corrosionresistance. It can reduce the weight of car bodies on the premise that the stiffness andmodal frequency meet requirements when it is applied to the engine hood. So itachieves the goal of the lightweight of automobile.First of all, the research and application of CFRP on automobile covering parts iselaborated, which shows the gap between domestic and abroad. So it is necessary todo the research. Then the calculation models of the honeycomb sandwich plate aretreated in detail. Besides, different kinds of composite molding processes areintroduced, especially the Resin Transfer Molding(RTM).The paper puts forward a design scheme of CFRP hood based on the reversedesign method. The CFRP hood has the same shape with the existing hood made ofsteel. The optimized ply orientation angle and ply stacking sequence are obtained byexploring the influence on the bending stiffness, torsional rigidity and modalfrequency when the ply orientation angle and ply stacking sequence are different. Then the ply scheme is determined. Compared with the the existing hood, the onemade of CFRP shows evident superiority in the lightweight. However, it also has adisadvantage at the the thickness.Based on the comparison of various composite molding processes, RTM is chosento make the CFRP plates. The simulation software RTM-Worx and its usage areintroduced first. After that, the permeability of fiber perform, the injection pressureand the injection temperature are discussed about their influence on filling time. Someconclusions are as follows. Under the conditions that other parameters remain thesame, the permeability and injection pressure vary inversely to filling time separately.Filling time a linear decreasing function of the injection temperature. The defects ofRTM parts are also mentioned. The paper analyzes the CFRP hood from the aspects of construction and process. Its strengths and weaknesses are identified, which provides reference for the designand process parameters choosing of automobile covering parts, engine hood included.
