Nowadays, the increasingly severe environmental pollution has aroused extensiveattention. As the main pillar of the power industry, the thermal power plant should takemore responsibility for environmental protection. A steam turbine is one of the three majorequipments in a thermal power plant, whose heat rate is an important economic indicatorin measuring its operation. As technology is developing rapidly, accurately calculating theheat rate of different steam turbine can guide the energy conservation and emissionreduction. This paper will study the issues mentioned above and conduct the practiceresearch.Enthalpy values are used as the inputs of the heat rate calculation. However, theenthalpy values obtained by look-up table are discrete, which takes too much time. To getthe enthalpy values under different pressure and temperature, this paper adopts the leastsquares support vector machine to build the model of enthalpy, which is based on enthalpydata. Since the accuracy of the model rely heavily on the hyper-parameters, a newbio-inspired optimization algorithm, which is called Krill Herd, is introduced to theprocess of optimization for the least squares support vector machine(LSSVR). That waythe optimal model can be obtained. Besides, the KH-LSSVR is compared with other twomodeling methods (PSO-LSSVR, GSA-LSSVR), which can proves that the KH-LSSVMRhas the advantages of better precision and higher generalization performance over theother two methods.Basing on the enthalpy model, the hate rates of different steam turbines are calculatedby using their respective formulas. And the whole process uses the VC++6.0to call theMATLAB engine. The computing software is testified by the actual data, which confirmsthat the Krill Herd algorithm is feasible and effective. Besides, the software has highaccuracy and commonality, which can satisfy the technical specifications.
