The increasing number of Chinese power machine has brought energy andenvironment problems. The petroleum consumption is increasing year by year andforeign-trade dependence becomes bigger, this may lead the energy security.Environmental problem is also serious now. The alternative fuel which is one of importantways to solve these problems is going to be studied and used in the following days.In the research of alternative fuel butanol which is a new kind of fuel come out withits individual advantages, biodiesel is also an important kind of fuel to replace diesel. These two kinds of fuel are studied in this paper to research their influence on thecombustion and emission performance of diesel engine. The properties of fuel is studied through two kinds of method, using the empiricaldata to calculated the properties such as low heat value, oxygen content, cetane numberand so on. The density and viscosity is researched through experiment.Mixed fuels with different percentage are using on a single diesel engine. Heatrelease and other parameters will be calculated through the measurement of cylinderpressure, NO and smoke are measured by Horiba and Saxon Opacity. The results showsbutanol has big influence on the ignition delay and smoke.DGI equipment is used to study the PM distribution of alternative fuel. First thetheory and structure of DGI is introduced, then the hole working system of samplingsystem and working process are showed, the most important work is to get effective data. The experimental data shows butanol has decreased the PM whose practical size is theunder1μm a lot, on the other hand butanol has little influence on the PM above1μm. Italso changed the percentage of PM distribution.
