Material handling system is a very important subsystem in the logistics system thatwe are very concerned about now. And it`s primary target is to reduce transportation timeand costs in designing and managing such systems. In order to improve themaneuverability of the large ships, the main goal of the optimization of material handlingis to reduce material handling time. To achieve this goal, both material handling routeplanning and material handling sequence planning should be concerned. And these twoplanning problem are both NP-hard problem. But the research of the material handlingsequence planning is relatively simple under several assumed conditions. In essence,material handling sequence planning is a kind of scheduling problem, and is very similarto production scheduling.On the basis of the technical review in the domestic and foreign research on materialhandling path planning and job shop scheduling problem, this thesis has a systematicstudy on the material handling sequence planning considering the particularity of it. Firstly,the description of the material handling sequence planning issues is given to simplify thecomplex system to a problem with a certain hypothetical conditions which can bedescribed. With the combination of the modeling method for shop scheduling problem andthe characteristics of material handling sequence planning, focusing on the uncertainproblem of transporting sequences due to various disturbances in the handling process likethe process parallelism, the division of the material and the mutual exclusion among thematerials, the planning strategies for parallel process with a few of handling tools areresearched. The material handling sequence model which aims to minimize the makespanis set up. And then, genetic algorithm is developed to solve this model through the analysisof scheduling algorithm, whose chromosome coding is real coded. The paper designs thisalgorithm to apply it to the actual material handling sequence planning problems in detailbased on the data of a real ship. At the same time, the experimental results are given withthe combination of the concrete living example of material handling sequence planningproblem. And the result shows that different handling sequence will result to differentresults, and the consistent with the simulation results also verify the feasibility of the model.
