Increasing number of traffic accident in recent years has made people requesthigher active safety of the vehicles. As an important part of the chassis, tires providetraction and breaking forces for the vehicle. These forces are related to the roadconditions and vehicle status, thus the information from the sensors in the tires can beused to analyze the force of tire. Therefore, building a precise model of the tire-roadinteraction and providing derived real time information to the vehicle control modulemakes it feasible for monitoring the vehicle status and road information, and is veryimportant for ensuring the improvement of active safety of the vehicle.Sensors mounted in the tires can provide direct, accurate and abundantinformation of the tire-road interaction, which can meet the requirements of the smarttires. This paper make full use of the piezoelectric film sensors, by taking advantagesof its striking features such as lighter weight, high flexibility, high constant ofpiezoelectric voltage, rapid response, wide frequency response range and highsensitivity, to acquire the information of tire tread deformation. The following workshave been accomplished:1. The dynamic model of the vehicle braking system was established, and thesmart tire experimental platform based on Model drove oil with PVDF sensorsattached in the tires and a modified braking system was built in order to achieve thefunction of braking and speeding.2. The piezoelectric characteristic of the PVDF sensor was analyzed. Informationfrom the PVDF sensors in tires was collected, and the modules of wirelesstransmission, the vehicle controller and external data storage were designed;3. The design of the measurement model car speed and wheel speed of the devicewas presented. Collecting the information of wheel and vehicle speed timely throughthe main control board to achieve real-time processing and error analysis of wheelspeed signal.4. PVDF sensors gather piezoelectric signal during the operation of tiredeformation, and sent the data to the vehicle’s control module via wirelesstransmission module. The hardware platform of measurement and control system of the smart tire isdesigned in this paper, Design software for wireless transmission as well as vehicleand wheel speed. And the related experiments and research on the implementation ofPVDF piezoelectric sensors were carried out.
