The paper describes the hysteretic behaviour of concrete-filled steel tubes (CFST)under cyclic shear loading. The main achievements can be summarised as following:(1) Twenty five CFST specimens were tested under combined constant axial load andlateral shear loading, including13monotonic tests and12cyclic tests. The monotonictests investigated the influence of shear span ratio and axial compression ratio on theload-displacement curves and load-bearing capacity of CFST columns. The failureprocess of typical columns was analysed. In the cyclic tests, effects of differentparameters on the hysteretic behaviour, skeleton curve, strength deterioration, stiffnessdeterioration, energy dissipation and ductility were investigated.(2) Load versus deformation curves of CFST columns subjected to shearing andcompression-bending-shearing were calculated by finite element (FE) softwareABAQUS. The calculated results were verified by test results presented in this paper. Itdemonstrated that the FE predictions were reliable. Then, mechanisms ofconcrete-filled stiffened thin-walled steel tubes subjected to shearing andcompression-bending-shearing were analyzed using the FE modelling.(3) The influence of different parameters, such as concrete strength, steel yield strength, shear span ratio, axial compression ratio, sectional aspect ratio, upon the shearingbehaviour were investigated.(4) Simplified formulae in predicting shear strength of concrete-filled stiffened thin-walledsteel tubes were proposed. The predicted results were in good agreement with themeasured ones.
