In the land reclamation project, dredged slurry is a kind of commonhydraulic filling material. They have very low permeability, very highcompressibility and very long settlement duration. An inaccurate settlementprediction can induce engineering failure, which not only waste labors andnatural resources, but also threats people’s lives and properties. Thus, thesettlement prediction plays a significant role in the land reclamation fromsea. The permeability of hydraulic filling material of slurry has an importantimpact on the foundation settlement. In this paper, a method for measuringthe permeability of saturated slurry was discussed in details. Differentcontrast experiments were carried out to find out the experimental errors.Based on the permeability test data which were taken from the reclamationsite of Yueqing North Port, the Minhang River of Shanghai and togetherwith the data from other scholars, an empirical formula was proposed forpredicting the permeability coefficient of saturated slurries with wide voidratio. Compared with other empirical formulae, this formula has areasonable accuracy and broad applicability for engineering practice. The derivation and the discretization of one-dimensional nonlinearlarge deformation consolidation have been discussed based on the largedeformation consolidation theory. According to the equation of the largedeformation consolidation, its discretization and its numerical method havebeen explored.Combined with the empirical formula of permeability coefficientobtained in this paper, a numerical model for predicting the settlement ofhydraulic-filled base with high water slurry has been established based on Matlab. The numerical model is validated by a field survey and applied intothe reclamation engineering of Yueqin Port District.
