Traffic congestion has become a global challenge to urban administrators. It’s also a hot research topic of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). TheDynamic Routing is the solution that ITS proposed. In Dynamic Routing, vehicles reroute themselves with local digital map and congestion warningmessages received from network to avoid coming congestion and alleviatetraffic jams. How to disseminate congestion warning messages effectively isone of the most critical technologies in it.There are two types of dissemination algorithms so far,infrastructure-based and vehicle-to-vehicle-based. Due to the prohibitive costissue, the infrastructure-based solution is not likely to be deployed universally. The latter could be a good alternative in the area where the former one couldnot cover. Since vehicular network is featured with high mobility, thetraditional Ad-Hoc mode could no longer meet Dynamic Routing’s demands.Opportunistic network is a novel forwarding mechanism, featured with itsstore-carry-forward mode and delay-and-disruption-tolerant attribute.Location-based opportunistic forwarding is one main branch of this field, andhas caught more and more attentions because of its simplicity, reliability andeffectiveness. With the wide deployment of portable vehicular GPS equipment, the location-based algorithm has demonstrated a great potential for practicaluse. In this paper, we focus on Dynamic Routing application, and propose anovel location-based opportunistic relay model for congestion warningmessages. The model takes the direction and route of vehicle into consideration to avoid ineffective forwarding. The model is implemented on the TraCIsimulation platform. The evaluation result shows that our model decreasescommunication overhead dramatically while still achieve a high level ofdelivery ratio. We also evaluate the influence of vehicle grouping on theforwarding efficiency and trip-time improvement.
